Today is the day! (hopefully)
Today the contractor is supposed to come and get his temporary work shed, and finish up a few little things on the house. Today, if he does it, I will give him his final check. Then I will feel that the house is completely mine and I'll have all the keys.

Don't worry about all the extra cash you spent, everyone gets screwed by contractors [it's a rule], even ones who are their 'friends'... At the end of the day, you have a home that no-one can take away from you... Well, except the bank or the old girl :)
Sorry to hear about your brother and his girl, that sucks at the highest level.
